Read the September issue of Piano Explorer.   Complete the quiz on page 15.

Listen to this performance of the Mozart Sonata No. 16 in C Major.  There are 3 parts: The First Movement, the Second Movement, and the Third Movement.  Answer these questions.  The questions apply to all movements.

  1. When the performer plays a scale going up, does she usually get louder or get softer?
  2. Which hand has the melody?  The right hand or the left hand?
  3. Is the right hand louder or softer than the left hand?
  4. How would you describe the way this performer plays her scales? (Pick a word or come up with your own: even, lightly, fluidly, lumpy, jerky, etc.)
  5. Describe each movement (1st, 2nd, and 3rd movement) as adagio (slow), andante (walking speed), allegro (fast).
  6. Does the performer sit perfectly still while she plays?

On page 7 of the October Piano Explorer, there is a segment called “Composition Idea.”  You can compose a RH part for the LH part that is pictured on the page and then send it into the Piano Explorer.  If you do this, show me your RH part and I’ll give you $5.

Play your scales, chords and arpeggios musically every week.  This means that you crescendo when the notes go up, and diminuendo when the notes go down.
